Cordes and Young Each Grab Third Place Finishes

FAIRFIELD, Conn. –  On the third day of the 2017 MAAC Championships, the women continued o climb the leaderboard, ending the day in fifth place with 227 points. The men stayed put in ninth with 134.5 total points through three days of action.

Marist continues to lead the women’s side with 532 points, while the Rider men are holding steady atop the leaderboard with 585.5 points.

In the 1000 freestyle, Katelyn Hahn led the Stags with a personal best time of 10:56.92 and a 12th place finish. Behind her, Grace Goddard touched the wall in 10:59.06 (personal best) and placed 13th. Betsy Powers was the third Stag to finish, clocking in at a personal best 11:05.32 in 17th place.

In the 400 IM, three women earned a spot in the Finals. Emily Vlass placed 6th in the A-Final with a personal best time of 4:40.72. And in the B-Final, Goddard placed 10th with a personal best time of 4:43.90 and Lauren Belecanech finished 12th with a personal best time of 4:46.97.

Donna Lam and Oreoluwa Cherebin both earned a spot in the 100 butterfly B-Final. Lam placed 15th with a time of 1:00.69 and Cherebin followed in 16th with a 1:00.89.

Kelly Cordes picked up the best finish of the night with third place in the 200 freestyle, the sophomore touched the wall in 1:54.04.

Colleen Young matched Cordes’ third place finish with a third place of her own in the 100 breaststroke A-Final with a personal best time of 1:06.67. In the B-Final, Cherebin finished 9th with a personal best (1:07.46) and Vlass placed 10th (1:08.68).

In the 100 backstroke B-Final, Juliana Lally finished 14th overall with a personal best time of 1:01.53. Kristin Kunnapas touched the wall right behind her in 15th with a personal best time of 1:01.67.

In the 400 Medley Relay the women’s team of Kunnapas, Young, Lam, and Cordes placed 6th with a time of 4:01.59.

For the men, Phillip Zyskowski led the men with an 8th place finish in the 1000 freestyle, clocking in at 9:39.78. Jameson Duncan was the next Stag to finish, with a personal best time of 9:55.42 in 17th place. Austin Kenyon placed 21st with a personal best time of 10:05.10.

Jordan Rahurahu earned a spot in the 400 IM A-Final, placing 7th with a personal best time of 4:07.86. And in the B-Final Griffin Burke placed 14th overall with a personal best time of 4:12.34.

Justin Touve qualified for the 200 freestyle B-Final, placing 16th with a time of 1:46.02.

Andrew Gormley qualified for the B-Final of the 100 backstroke, placing 11th overall after clocking in at a new personal best time of 52.64.

The men’s relay team of Gormley, Andrew Tavcar, Rahurahu, and Zyskowsi finished 8th in the 400 Medley with a time of 3:31.39.

In diving action, Alex Shabecoff competed in the 3-meter finals. He qualified for the B-Final, finishing 12th with a score of 135.10.
