WORCESTER, Mass. – The Fairfield University women’s lacrosse team dropped their season opener at Holy Cross on Saturday, 11-8.
On a snowy day in Worcester, the Crusaders came out of the gates ready to go. Just 50 seconds into the contest the home team got on the board with a goal from Maddie Ward.
Fairfield answered with two consecutive goals by Lily Crager and Olivia Russell, who earned her first career start. The two scores gave the Stags a 2-1 advantage just seven minutes into the contest.
After that, Holy Cross would score five consecutive goals to give themselves a 6-2 lead with less than one minute remaining in the opening frame. Scarlett Sulliman would tally one for Fairfield right before the end of the half to cut the lead to just 6-3 heading into halftime.
The second half was more balanced between the two sides, each scoring five goals apiece. Fairfield came out of the break with three straight tallies by Brenna Connolly, Kathleen Hulseman, and Crager to even the score at 6-6.
But the Crusaders answered right back with a three goal run of their own over the next three minutes to build a 9-6 advantage. From that point on, the two teams would trade scores with one another. Sulliman notched her second of the day and Riley Hellstein got on the board late in the game with a free position goal.
Sulliman and Crager led the Fairfield offense with two goals apiece, while Hellstein, Connolly, Russell, and Hulseman all had one. Senior Caleigh O'Connor got the second start of her career and made five saves in cage.
Fairfield will next play on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium when they host UConn for their home opener of Wednesday, February 15.
