CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Fairfield University softball hit a pair of home runs on its opening day of the season, but the Stags could not parlay those long balls into a victory as the team started the year with a 3-1 loss to Robert Morris and a 12-4 setback against La Salle.

Angelina McGuire opened the day with a leadoff home run in the first inning that gave Fairfield its first lead of the day. Robert Morris tied the score in the second by pairing a leadoff single with a double that knotted the score at 1-1. A pair of singles broke the tie in the third inning as Robert Morris took the lead with a two-out single. The final run of the day was produced with a single and a one-out double that made the score 3-1.

Although the team scored just one run, Fairfield threatened throughout the game, placing a runner on third base in the second, third, and fourth innings. In the second frame, Fairfield Lisa Meringer and Gianna Kinhofer stroked back-to-back one-out single and were sacrificed to second and third but could not find their way home. Lauren Petersen doubled in the third inning and made it to third base as well but a pair of fly balls ended the threat. The fourth inning saw Kate Robinson lead off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. A stolen base and a ground out placed the runner on third but a two-out hit was not meant to be for the Stags.

In the second game, La Salle scored five runs in the top of the first inning and never gave up the lead in its 12-4 win over the Stags. The Explorers also scored multiple runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 12-0 lead. Fairfield averted the shutout when Tori Reed launched a grand slam that scored Molly Roche, Lacey Olaff, and Petersen as well.

The Stags continue play in the Green & White Tournament which includes a game against host UNC-Charlotte.
