Softball Sweeps on Opening Day of Patriot Classic

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Fairfield University softball team put a couple of results in the win column this afternoon by sweeping a pair of games at the Patriot Classic this afternoon. The Stags opened the day with a 9-5 win over Columbia and followed with a 6-4 decision over host George Mason in the second game.

After the Stags put up a single run in their first at-bat, Columbia answered with four runs in the bottom of inning to take a 4-1 advantage. Fairfield chipped away with single runs in the third and fourth inning, pulling within a run at 4-3 going into the fifth frame. In that inning, the Stags posted three more runs to take their second lead of the game at 6-4. Columbia responded with a single run in its turn at bat but the Stags took command with another three-spot in the sixth inning.

The freshmen class was responsible for half of the team’s hits against Columbia as Lacey Olaff posted four hits in as many plate appearances and Amanda Ulzheimer was also perfect at the plate with three hits in three at-bats. Destinee Pallotto earned her first win of the season by scattering 10 hits and fanning three hitters.

In the second game, Gianna Kinhofer and Courtney Hankins each recorded a pair of hits to pace the Stags to a 6-4 win over George Mason. Rachel Sieber, Makenna DiGuilio, Olaff, and Kinhofer each had an RBI in the game as scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings to break a 4-4 tie and earn the victory. Karisa Hughen goes the distance in the pitching circle, fanning three and allowing 11 hits.
