RICHMOND, Va. –Gavin Wallacefinished what he started, going all eight innings for the second-straight start and allowed just two runs, but VCU’s pitching duo of Connor Gillispie and Jonathan Ebersole was just a little better as the Stags fell 2-1 to the Rams, completing a three-game sweep (all by one-run) for the Atlantic 10 squad.
The Stags (2-5) manufactured their first and only run in the second when Troy Scoccaled off the frame with a single and after a Jack Gethingswalk, the two advanced one base on a Mitch Williamssacrifice bunt. Scocca would then score on a Dylan ReynoldsRBI groundout.
Wallace kept that lead until the fourth inning when VCU (6-5) drove in two runs on RBI singles from Alex Gransback and Nick Rabat, both coming with two outs.
Wallace would allow a lone hit during his final four innings, retiring 11 of the final 13 batters he faced.
For the second-straight game, the Stags reached double figures in hits, putting on 10 against the Rams. Tyler Gambardellaled the effort with his first career three-hit game, with Gethings following his classmate with two base knocks.
The Stags will next make their annual southern trip as they head to the sunny state of Florida to begin a three game series against Penn in Port St. Lucie, Fla., beginning with a double header on Saturday at noon.
