FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Led by hat tricks from freshmen Dylan Beckwith and Travis Ford, the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team powered past visiting NJIT, 13-6, on Tuesday afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Nine different players notched points for the Stags en route to matching their season high of 13 goals in the home victory.
Fairfield (3-5) snaps a three-game losing streak with the win over the Highlanders. In addition to matching their season-high scoring output, the Stags limited an opponent to single-digit tallies for the fifth time in their last six outings.
Beckwith totaled a career-best five points with two assists to go along with his hat trick. Ford’s hat trick was the second of his career; he was previously named CAA Rookie of the Week after tallying four goals at Yale on March 11.
Helping to keep the Stags’ offense on the field was Joe DeLasho, who went 14-of-18 on the draw with eight ground balls. Will Fox and Liam Lynch each added a win on the dot as Fairfield came away with 16-of-22 faceoffs in total. Also aiding the possession effort was Samuel Murphy with three ground balls.
In the cage, Tyler Behring made eight saves to earn the win. The Fairfield defense pressured NJIT into 16 turnovers, including three caused by JB Smith and two forced by Logan Williamson.
NJIT (0-9) was led by four goals from Aaron Forster and two from Ryan Callaghan, and Matt Brown and Ryan Kaden each handed out one assist. Cameron Cronk started in the cage and ceded eight goals with three saves. Nick Marzullo finished the effort in goal, coming away with nine saves with allowing five Fairfield tallies.
The Stags were off to a fast start this afternoon with four different players rattling the cage to stake Fairfield to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter. Ford completed his hat trick before the intermission, scoring twice in a 6-0 second frame to send the Stags into the locker room with a 10-2 advantage. Prior to today, Fairfield’s last 10-goal half came in a 13-9 win over Colgate on March 14, 2015 at Rafferty Stadium.
Beckwith accounted for two of the Stags’ three second-half goals – with Knostman adding the other for his second of the day – as Fairfield cruised to a 13-6 triumph.
The Stags will play back-to-back home games for the first time this spring - and just their third home contest of the season overall - with a Saturday, March 25 visit from Villanova. The meeting with the Wildcats marks the celebration of Fairfield University’s 75th Anniversary and the 25th varsity season of Fairfield men’s lacrosse.
The current homestand will span three games in total as the Stags open their CAA slate with a visit from No. 7 Hofstra under the lights on Saturday, April 1 at 7 p.m.
