Softball Fades Late At Providence
March 29, 2017
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Amanda Ulzheimer brought home the team's only run with a fielder's choice while four other Stags collected a hit in the game, but the Fairfield University softball team could not overcome Providence College in a 7-1 loss on the road.
The Friars put up the first run of the game when Vanessa Portillo led off the second inning with a solo home run down the left field line. The team tacked on another run later in the inning after Emma Lee's RBI double pushed the score to 2-0. Providence added another run in the third frame after Portillo sent a single to the outfield that chased home the team's third run.
Fairfield put together its best rally of the day when the team came to bat in the third inning. After a ground out started the inning, Angelina McGuire, Kate Robinson, and Molly Roche each recorded a base hit to lead the bases with one out. Ulzheimer followed with a fielder's choice that retired the runner going to second base, but chased home the Stags' only run of the game.
Providence would add four more runs in the sixth inning to virtually put the game out of reach, scoring two of those runs off a wild pitch and a passed ball. Fairfield would not pick up another hit after its third-inning rally.
Destinee Pallotto started the game and allowed three runs in her three-plus innings of work. Karisa Hughen allowed the remaining four runs but only one of those runs were earned. Danielle Tringalli closed the game for the Fairfield pitching staff, securing the final out in the sixth inning.
The Stags will return to action on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Sacred Heart University for a 3 pm game.
