Women's Lacrosse Wins Fourth Straight

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women’s lacrosse team is 2-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference after a 14-10 victory over the Purple Eagles in Niagara on Saturday afternoon. For the fourth straight game, senior captain Riley Hellstein notched at least five points as she tallied six on the day including five goals and an assist. The attacker also collected four draw controls and caused two turnovers. The team as a whole recorded double-digit goals for the fourth consecutive game as well.

Seniors Alex Fehmel and Scarlett Sulliman each registered three points of their own. Fehmel tallied three goals while Sulliman had two goals and an assist. Brenna Connolly added a goal and an assist in the win, and Brooke Gallagher, Kathleen Hulseman, and Taylor Mitchell all scored once for the Stags.

Erin Mammele had a game-high five draw controls, while Fehmel led the way with five caused turnovers. Caleigh O'Connor played the full 60 minutes in cage, making seven saves against 25 total shots.

The visitors got off to a 3-0 lead when Fehmel, Hellstein, and Mitchell all got on the board in the opening 12 minutes of the game. Niagara answered with back-to-back scores, but Fairfield then scored the next three. Hellstein netted her second, while Connolly and Hulseman got their names on the board for the first time. One more score by the Purple Eagles made the score 6-3 in favor of the Stags heading into the locker room.

Niagara cut the lead down to two in the opening minute of the second frame. But Fairfield would go on to score six of the next eight in the following 15 minutes to build a six-goal advantage with under 14 minutes to play. The home side would get as close as 13-10 with under five minutes left, but Sulliman would score moments later to restore the four-goal lead and secure the team’s fourth consecutive win.

The Stags next game is on Wednesday, April 5 when they host Monmouth on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium at 3:00 p.m.
