WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team took the first of two non-conference games against in-state opponents this afternoon with its 5-3 win over the University of Hartford this afternoon. Junior Kristen Ball drove home a pair of runs and earned her second save by picking up the final out of the game from the pitcher's circle.
The Stags scored first in this game, posting a run in the top of the second inning. Angelina McGuire started the inning with a double and went to third following Gianna Kinhofer's sacrifice bunt. McGuire came home after Ball's grounder was mishandled, placing Fairfield in front by a 1-0 count.
Ball played a role in the team's next two runs, stroking a two-run single that pushed the advantage to 3-0. McGuire began the rally with a one-out single and took second base after Kinhofer's grounder was misplayed. Hannah Futo advanced both runners one base with a ground out to the right side of the infield, setting up Ball's two-run single.
The Hawks registered their first run of the game by combining a pair of hits with two Fairfield errors to score an unearned run. Fairfield picked up an unearned run itself in the top of the fifth as two errors provided the team with a 4-1 lead. The Stags closed out their scoring with another run in the seventh inning as Cythina Meringer opened the inning with a walk. Makenna DiGuilio added a pinch-hit single that was coupled with an error that allowed Meringer to reach third base. Molly Roche followed with an RBI single that brought the score to 5-1.
Hartford made it more interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning after Lexi Wilkerson launched a two-run, two-out home run that made the score 5-3. Ball entered the game in relief of Madison Roberts and retired the next hitter to earn the save. Roberts collected the victory after relieving starter Danielle Tringalli, who tossed the first three innings.
Fairfield wraps up its in-state two-game run by hosting Sacred Heart University on Thursday at 3 pm.
