NEWARK, N.J. – NJIT's Rex MacMillan hit a three-run walk off home run to turn a 12-10 Stags lead into a 13-12 defeat as the Fairfield University baseball team was edged at NJIT. MacMillan's shot was one of six home runs on the day between the two teams with both squads hitting three apiece. Drew Arciuolo, Kevin Radziewicz, and Troy Scocca went deep for the Stags who slugged three homers in a game for the second time this season.
Before MacMillan's heroics, the Stags (24-18) used the top part of their lineup to lead by as many as four with an 11-7 lead in the eighth inning. The first four players in their lineup accounted for nine of the team's 13 hits and drove in all nine RBI. The leadoff man of that lineup, Arciuolo got the Stags going with a two-run shot in the third to cut the NJIT (5-34) lead to 4-2. After Jack Gethings singled and stole second base, Kevin Radziewicz extended his career mark with his third home run of the season, tying the game at 4-4.
After the Highlanders scored the go-ahead run in the third and two more in the fifth, the Stags finally grabbed the lead in the seventh. Radziewicz was the first Stag to deliver with a two-run single to center and Scocca slugged the third homer for the team, giving Fairfield an 8-7 advantage.
The Stags scored three runs in the eighth off a pair of errors and gained an insurance run in the ninth on a Gethings' fielder's choice.
NJIT also put on a power display as Matt Cocciadiferro and Jesse Uttendorfer both homered.
Arciuolo and Gethings led the Stags with three hits apiece, helping the first four hitters go 9-for-20 in the contest. Aside from the biggest hit in the game, MacMillan also led all players with five RBI.
The Stags will try and get back on track when they host Monmouth for a three-game series beginning on Saturday with a doubleheader at noon.
