Women's Lacrosse Falls to Canisius in Title Game

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team lost a hard fought game on Sunday afternoon in the 2017 MAAC Championship Game. Top seeded Canisius out battled No. 2 Fairfield, 13-10 to claim the tournament title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Taylor Mitchell and Lily Crager paced the Fairfield offense with three goals apiece, while Alex Fehmel scored twice and Riley Hellstein and Scarlett Sulliman each tallied one score. Junior Brenna Connolly dished out two assists to finish the season with 25 helpers.

Caleigh O'Connor made several key stops in cage and recorded nine saves in total in her final performance as a Fairfield Stag. Megan Beach led the team with six groundballs, while Katie FitzPatrick caused four turnovers, and Fehmel collected four draw controls.

Canisius opened the game with five of the first six goals to grab a 5-1 advantage just 12 minutes into the game. After that point the Stags went on to outscore the Griffs 9-8.

At the half, Fairfield trailed 5-7. Mitchell and Crager each had two goals in the first half, and Fehmel chipped in with one.

Erica Evans opened the second half scoring for Canisius with back to back to goals to put her team up by four. The Stags would never get closer than two scores as Canisius answered after every Fairfield goal.

Hellstein, Fehmel, and FitzPatrick all earned All-Championship Team honors for their outstanding play this weekend.

Fairfield officially concludes their season with an overall record of 12-6 after posting a 7-1 mark in conference play.
