Labine began his rowing career as a walk-on at Yale University (B.A. Economics, 1981). In his three years in the Yale varsity 8+, he won two Eastern Sprint Championships, went undefeated in regular season 2000 meter racing, competed in the finals of the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in the U.K., and won the Championship Four at the Head of the Charles by thirty seconds.
After college, he was on two US National teams, winning bronze in the US 8+ at the 1981 World Championships, and was a finalist in the US Olympic trials in 1980 (4-, 2nd place) and in 1984 (2-, third place). Matt has been coaching rowing since 2010. When not wearing his coaching cap, he is a television writer and has won four Writers Guild Awards and a Daytime Emmy Award for his work on various daytime dramas.
