Athletics Donor Spotlight: EJ Dougherty
April 26, 2016
“It is important to give back, whether it is volunteering your time or with a donation. Giving back strengthens the university’s community providing a strong foundation for the future.” These words were spoken by EJ Dougherty, Fairfield Athletics donor and father of Liam Dougherty ‘19, a student-athlete on Fairfield University’s men’s soccer team. Although he began playing organized sports at the age of 14, EJ Dougherty’s intellectual talents led him to a successful career within the technology field. He currently works in the Emerging Technology Wearable Practice for Accenture, a leading global professional services company.
A Villanova alumnus, Dougherty currently serves as a part-time undergraduate professor of his alma mater. With a passion for IT and technology, Dougherty obtained his masters in computer science and shortly after found opportunities working for organizations nationally and globally. “I went back to Villanova part time after a few years and received my Masters in Computer Science. I worked at a couple of local technology-based companies that were involved in acquisitions and had the opportunity to work on some really cool software and hardware related projects. From managing the operations at intermodal terminals for a major railroad to building a RF controlled robot that captures 360 degree video for a CAVE virtual environment -- and just about everything in between. Over the past 5 years, I have also been teaching undergraduate courses at Villanova University in the Engineering Entrepreneurship Program (Creativity, Prototyping and Venture Plans) and Mobile Application Development (Android).”
While his focus now centers on creating solutions for generations to come, Dougherty hopes that current student-athletes utilize every resource possible while earning their undergraduate education. “Keep working hard in the classroom and on the pitch. Take advantage of new opportunities that come along that will help you grow as person: mind, heart, body and spirit. I remember my Jesuit education, I went to Saint Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia, PA and still take with me the lessons I learned back then. Whether it is a summer internship, traveling abroad on a service trip or even participating in business competition or hackathon. Never be afraid to take a calculated risk or step outside your comfort zone. But even more importantly, be sure to enjoy the moment.”
When asked why he gives back to Fairfield Athletics, Dougherty’s reason is humble and simple: gratitude. “I simply wanted to show my support and appreciation to Fairfield Athletics, specifically the Men’s Soccer Program. In some small way, hoping it will help enhance the student-athletes’ experience and provide opportunities for the players, and to the program itself”. When he’s not busy innovating or teaching, Dougherty and his wife Pam enjoy spending time with friends and watching their sons Liam and Colin play soccer.
