Swimming and Diving Welcomes Gaels on Friday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams will host their final two home meets of the season at the RecPlex Pool when they welcome Iona College on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and the women will then host Sacred Heart University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for their senior meet.

Last weekend saw record setting performances for two freshman Stags. Phillip Zyskowski set a new record in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 17:02.47 in the meet against St. Francis. The freshman broke junior Jameson Duncan’s record of 17:04.95 that was set back in 2015. Then on Monday against Siena, Colleen Young finished the 200m breaststroke in 2:43.25 beating Lauren Kennedy’s record of 2:43.84 that was set back in 2009.

Both Iona teams are coming into Friday after a 1-1 weekend. The teams beat out Pace on January 13 before falling to Delaware on January 15. Against the Setters, Matthew Bosse and Zack Holbrook each won two races for the Gaels. Bosse took home first place in the both the 100 and 200 backstroke, while Holbrook placed first in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. For the women, Elizabeth Kaczmarek paved the way for Iona, winning three individual races. She took home first place in the 200 breaststroke, 200 freestyle, and 200 IM.

Sacred Heart is coming into the weekend off a victory over Manhattan on January 14. Kim Hylan earned a victory in the 500 freestyle (5:26.89), Jillian Crosby placed first in the 200 freestyle (2:00.56), and Lauren Somers won the 100 freestyle (52.86).

After this weekend, the Stags will have one final tune up before MAAC Championships begin. The teams will travel to Middletown to face Wesleyan and Connecticut College on January 27.
