FAIRFIELD, Conn. – For the Fairfield University women’s tennis team, the 2017 spring season begins this Friday at St. John’s in Flushing, New York. First serve is slated for 12:00 p.m. at the National Tennis Center.

The team will look to build off their fall season in which they finished strong at the NJIT Invitational in October. Freshman Shelby Vertula posted a 4-1 combined record in singles and doubles matches. She earned singles victories over two different Sacred Heart players. In doubles play she teamed with Emily Lombardi to top the Saint Joseph’s duo and with Meghan Zimmer to take down a Sacred Heart pair.

Earlier in October, Sarah Stuhlmann and Diana Prinos represented the Stags at the ITA Regional Championships. Stuhlmann fell 6-2, 6-3 in a singles match against Drexel and the two paired up to face Seton Hall before falling 8-4.

St. John’s will play their first home match of the spring season, but competed on the road at the Florida Gulf Coast Spring Invite earlier in the month. Freshman Jessica Livianu posted a 3-0 record in singles play at the No. 1 spot and posted a doubles win in which she paired with senior Anna Morozova.

After Friday’s match, the Stags will next play on February 4 against Lafayette at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
