Men's Tennis Welcomes Davidson for Spring Opener

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s tennis team will take to the courts for the first time in 2017 on Sunday against Davidson at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center at 2:00 p.m.
The team wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule with a 2-1 match record that included wins over Rider and Hofstra. In the win over Hofstra, Fairfield grabbed the doubles point with wins from Jeffrey Rodgers and Ethan Ammon at No. 2 while Anthony Caputo and Dylan Appel grabbed a win at No. 3.
In singles play, Fairfield earned four more wins to get the 5-2 decision over the Pride. Brad Orban bested Niko Vulinovich 4-5, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1. At No. 4, Tyler Shibles topped Nick Silvestri 6-4, 4-6, 10-3. Ammon got a straight set win in the fifth spot, while Appel grabbed a straight set victory of his own in the sixth spot.
At the ITA Regionals in October, Orban topped Hector Martinez from Saint Bonaventure 6-7, 6-1, 6-1. Then he and Shibles teamed up and fell to a Princeton duo, 8-3.
In the second round, Orban matched up with Kaoy from Buffalo and fell 6-1, 7-5.
Davidson comes into the weekend having just beat Gardner-Webb 7-0 on Wednesday and will face Fordham on Saturday before visiting the Stags on Sunday. In the win over Gardner-Webb, No. 1 Shamael Chaudhry earned a win in singles and teamed up with Jack Razzi in the second doubles spot for a win.
After Sunday’s match, the Stags will welcome Lafayette on Saturday, February 4.
