FAIRFIELD, Conn. – If you take a look outside you can probably see a steady flow of rain falling from the sky. It will be like this all day long, but that rain will give way to the sunshine this weekend and treat the Fairfield University baseball fan to a pleasant experience during the first weekend games at the new Alumni Diamond. The Stags will play a three-game series against in-state nonconference opponent Hartford with the first two games being played at Alumni Diamond on Sunday with a doubleheader at 12:15pm. The two teams will close the series in Hartford on Monday at 3pm.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Stags dropped their home opener on Wednesday by a 6-1 score against UConn. The Huskies made the most of their opportunities by hitting .333 with runners in scoring position compared to Fairfield’s one hit in the same situations. The biggest hit for the Stags came in the third inning when Fairfield knotted the score at 1-1 following a Kevin Radziewicz RBI double. Jack Gethings started the two-out rally by singling in the prior at-bat and then scoring all the way from first on Radziewicz’s poke down the line. Freshmen Josh Arnold and Austin Pope impressed in their innings of work, with Arnold retiring the first six batters he faced during his first career appearance at home.

THE HAWKS SCOUTING REPORT: The Hawks were picked to finish third in the America East Preseason Poll and has started the season with a 4-12 record. The pitching for the Hawks has started slow this year as the team supports a 10.09 ERA through the first 16 games of the season with opponents hitting .339 against Hartford pitching. The offense has been a different story. Junior catcher Erik Ostberg is tied for the national lead with a .500 batting average and leads the country with a .600 on-base-percentage while starting all 16 games this season. The former First Team All-New England slugger also leads the nation in runs per game (1.63) and is second with a .914 slugging percentage.

UP NEXT: The Stags will play in two mid-week games in the upcoming week as they travel to NYIT to take on the Bears on Tuesday at 3:30pm and then return home to host Yale at 3pm on Wednesday.
