FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball team, winners of three-straight series, will put that streak on the line when they host the Manhattan Jaspers for a three-game slate beginning with a Saturday double header at noon. The Jaspers were one of only two MAAC teams to win the series against the Stags last season when they took two out of three from Fairfield. This will also be a rematch of last year’s MAAC Tournament when the Stags topped Manhattan 5-2 in their first game of the tournament.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Stags used their young arms to cool down the Yale Bulldogs with a 5-1 victory at Alumni Diamond. Yale had come into the game winners of nine of their previous 11 games. Austin Pope was the first of three rookie pitchers to set the tone for the contest as the freshman allowed only a first inning unearned run in his five innings of work to pick up his first collegiate win. Josh Arnold and Ian Halpin combined to work two shutout innings while senior Mike Bonaiuto also provided two scoreless frames. Offensively, the Stags leading hitter so far this season Jack Gethings chipped in a two-run single in a four run second inning while Drew Arciuolo gave the Stags the lead with a RBI double one batter earlier.

PROMOTIONS: Saturday’s doubleheader will be held as part Fairfield Athletics’ year-long “Stags for a Cure” partnership with the Norma Pfriem Breast Center in Fairfield.  T-shirts will be sold for $10 with all proceeds benefitting the local organization.

THE JASPERS SCOUTING REPORT: The Jaspers are similar to the Stags in the fact that they return all three starting pitchers from a season ago. Among the trio, Tom Cosgrove currently leads the conference in strikeouts as the junior averages 14.8 per nine innings. Fairfield faced Joey Rocchietti twice last season and had mixed results. Rocchietti took the victory over Fairfield in the regular season with a nine-inning complete game shutout but was charged with the loss during the tournament. Offensively, the Jaspers are led by the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Fabian Pena who boasts a .344 batting average and a .533 slugging percentage with nine doubles.

UP NEXT: The Stags will play two midweek contests on the road next week starting with a contest on Tuesday at 3pm.
