FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women’s tennis team will host Marist on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. on the WAC Tennis Courts. Sacred Heart then visits on Thursday for the final non-conference match of the season at 3:00 p.m.

The Stags clinched a spot in the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships with their win over Niagara on Sunday. Freshman Shelby Vertula clinched the match after fighting back from two breaks down to win in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-4) at No. 5. The Fairfield duos of Emily Lombardi / Karen McKeough and Diana Prinos / Vertula won their doubles matches to give Fairfield the point. Jessica Pil at No. 4 and Emily Lombardi at No. 6 earned the two other singles points to help the Stags get the team win.

Marist is currently 4-1 in league play with their only loss coming against Siena. Most recently, the Red Foxes fell to St. Bonaventure 4-1 on April 9. The duo of Callie Morlock / Elizabeth Brozovich earned the lone doubles win for Marist at No. 3. And in singles action, Claire Schmitz grabbed a straight set 6-2, 6-0 win in the third spot.

Sacred Heart has lost their last seven matches and will host Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday before matching up with Fairfield on Thursday. Last season the Pioneers took down the Stags 7-0 on April 11. Of the current starters for Fairfield, only Nicole Aragones and Karen McKeough played in that match last season.

After Thursday’s match, Fairfield will head to Hamden on Tuesday, April 18 for a league contest against Quinnipiac.
