Women's Tennis Takes on No. 1 Quinnipiac on Saturday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women’s tennis team returns to the MAAC Championships after a one year absence from the postseason tournament. As the No. 4 seed, the team will take on No. 1 Quinnipiac in the 2017 MAAC Semifinals at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. First serve is slated for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 29.

Fairfield started off MAAC play 4-0 and clinched a spot in the tournament back on April 9 after beating Niagara. Freshman Shelby Vertula fought back from two sets down to clinch the match over the Purple Eagles, 4-3. The Fairfield duo of Emily LombardiKaren McKeough picked up a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles. And at No. 3, Diana Prinos and Shelby Vertula earned a 6-2 win to secure the doubles point. Fairfield got three more points in singles play to secure the league win. Jessica Pil picked up a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win in the fourth spot. Vertula won in three sets at No. 5 (6-2, 4-6, 6-4). And in the sixth spot, Lombardi grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Just last week, the Stags traveled to Hamden to face Quinnipiac on April 18. The Bobcats came away with a 7-0 win. Fairfield kept the score close at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but were unable to get a victory as the Bobcats swept to earn the point. Nicole Aragones / Sarah Stuhlmann dropped a 6-4 decision in the first spot. And Emily Lombardi / Karen McKeough fell by the same score at No. 2. In singles action Quinnipiac earned six wins, all in straight-set fashion.

With a win over Quinnipiac on Saturday, the Stags would advance to the Championship Match on Sunday, April 30 at 10:00 a.m. to face the winner of No. 2 Siena and No. 3 Marist.
