DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Northeast might have to deal with a snowstorm on Tuesday, but for the Fairfield University baseball team, it’s just another series in the Sunshine State. The Stags will continue their Spring Break trip in Florida when they take part in their first mid-week series of the season against Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach. The two-game series that will feature two teams that appeared in the NCAA Regionals last season will begin on Tuesday at 6pm, followed by the finale at the same time on Wednesday night.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Stags lost two of the three games they played against the University of Penn to begin their Florida trip. In their lone win of the series, pinch hitter Tim Zengtied the game at 4-4 with a single in the fifth inning. The Stags loaded the bases in the sixth inning with nobody out and got the go-ahead run across with a double play. Jack Gethings, who led the squad with six hits in the series, stroked a RBI double the other way to give the Stags a 6-4 advantage. Mac Crispinofaced last year’s Ivy League saves leader in the eighth inning and was able to put across another insurance run with a single to right.
THE WILDCATS SCOUTING REPORT: Last year’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Champion Wildcats are off to a 9-6 start in 2017, with their last victory coming against Florida A&M on Saturday. Offensively, the Stags will have to deal with last year’s All-MEAC Third Team selection in speedy shortstop Demetrius Sims. The redshirt junior tied for fourth place last season in the MEAC with 60 hits and placed third on the team in runs scored. This year, Sims has already accounted for 17 hits, a team-high 11 runs scored, and two triples (just one off of last year’s mark). Freshman All-America selection Danny Rodriguez is the team’s big power threat after crushing 10 last season, three in the conference tournament. Rodriguez once again leads the team in long balls, crushing a pair during the early season.
UP NEXT: The Stags will play in their final series in Florida when they travel to face another NCAA Regional participant from last season in the Stetson Hatters. First pitch of the three-game series will be scheduled for Friday at 6:30pm.
