Baseball Sweeps Saint Peter's
JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University baseball team won their second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series by sweeping a doubleheader from Saint Peter’s University this afternoon. The Stags pulled out a 7-4 win in the first game and closed the day with an 8-2 victory. Fairfield improves to 8-11 overall and to 4-1 in MAAC play.
Sophomore Jake Salpietro went a combined 3-for-7 on the day with a double, walks, two RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
Fairfield will open play at Alumni Diamond tomorrow, April 1, when it hosts NYIT at 3:30pm. The Stags travel to Northeastern on April 2 and then return home to host Canisius, April 5-6.
Game One Recap: Fairfield held off a rally by Saint Peter’s to come away with a 7-4 victory. Freshman Michael Conti went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored while Rob LoPinto drove in two runs on two hits.
Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Salpietro drove in Alex Witkus. With one out in the second, Conti doubled and then scored on a double by junior Sal Ciccone to make it 2-0. The Stags took advantage of a pair of Peacock errors in the top of the third which allowed two more runs to score.
Saint Peter’s got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single by Jon Kristoffersen. In the top of the sixth, Fairfield put runners at second and third with two outs. LoPinto delivered a single to drive in Brendan Tracy while Conti later scored on a throwing error during a double steal to make it 6-1.
The Peacocks cut the lead in half with a two-run seventh inning. The Stags got one of the runs back on a RBI single by LoPinto. Saint Peter’s got a two-out rally going in the bottom of the ninth. With a runner on, Kyle Grimes doubled to plate the run and pull the Peacocks within 7-4. Rob Moore followed with a single to move Grimes to third, but the Stags were able to get out of the inning.
Junior EJ Ashworth (2-2) picked up the win, going 6.0 innings, scattering three runs, two earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore Aaron Howell picked up the save, going 3.0 innings and holding Saint Peter’s to one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
Junior Dean Sadik started the game off with a walk and the Stags took advantage of timely hitting a Saint Peter’s error to jump out to the 4-0 lead. Plourde made it 7-0 with a three-run, inside-the-park homerun in the top of the third inning.
The Peacocks pushed one run across the plate in the bottom of the third. After Kristoferrsen reached on a fielder’s choice in the third, Wallace retired the next seven batters he faced. Fairfield, meanwhile, added its eighth run of the day on a RBI triple by Billy Zolga in the sixth inning. The Stags committed two errors in the bottom of the sixth which gave the run right back to the Peacocks. Junior Andrew Gallagher came on in the bottom of the seventh and retired the Peacocks in order.
Wallace (2-3) notched the win, going 6.0 innings and allowing just two runs, one earned, on five hits while fanning six batters.
