Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Sacred Heart
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball team swept a non-league doubleheader from crosstown rival Sacred Heart University on a chilly afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The Stags edged the Pioneers, 2-1, in the opener before taking the nightcap, 5-0.
Fairfield (24-18) is scheduled to play Stony Brook University at 3:30pm tomorrow on Alumni Diamond, weather permitting. There was also a change to the series with Central Connecticut State University. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3, on Alumni Diamond beginning at 1pm. The two teams will head to New Britain on Sunday for a match-up beginning at 1pm.
Game One Recap: Junior Dean Sadik drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth inning to force in the go-ahead run in the Stags’ 2-1 victory.
Fairfield took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as senior Ryan Plourde scored on an RBI single by sophomore Brendan Tracy. The Pioneers tied up in the top of the sixth inning as Jayson Sullivan led off with a homerun.
In the bottom of the sixth, Tracy led off with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice by Jack Giannini. Junior Sebastian Salvo drew walk to put a pair of runners on. With two outs, Alex Witkus was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Sadik walked on four straight pitches to force in pinch runner Eric Fajardo and give the Stags the lead. Sacred Heart was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.
Tracy went 2-for-3 while Plourde went 2-for-2 with a walk.
Junior Anthony DiMauro (2-1) picked up the win after throwing a scoreless inning of relief. Senior Christian Fox picked up his third save of the season after getting the final two outs of the game. Sophomore Joe Randall got the no-decision after going 5.1 innings, scattering four hits, and allowing just one run in the start.
Game Two Recap: Three Stags combined for the shutout in the nightcap as Fairfield topped the Pioneers, 5-0. Junior Tucker Panciera improved to 5-1 on the season after going 4.0 innings and scattering four hits. Freshman Kyle Dube tossed two scoreless innings of relief while junior Andrew Gallagher closed it out with a scoreless seventh, striking out two of the four batters he faced.
Fairfield put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Plourde drew a walk. Jake Salpietro then singled to center, but an errant throw on the play allowed Plourde to score to put Stags on the board. Salpietro moved up to second base on the play and would easily score on an RBI single by Giannini.
The Stags added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Dan Hopkins reached and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Brian Murphy, he scored on a single by Michael Conti. With two outs, senior Rob LoPinto doubled to deep center to score Conti and make it 4-0. The Stags added their final run of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning as Witkus scored on an error.
