FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team closed out its 2016 season by falling to Quinnipiac University at Lessing Field. The game also marked the final match played by the senior class which included goalkeeper Joe Martin, defender Martin Lindgren, midfielder Ben Whitcomb, and forward Dominic Marshall.

The senior class gave a valiant effort in their final game as Stags, each making contributions in the game. Martin turned away two shots and faced nine attempts by Quinnipiac, while Lindgren helped keep the Quinnipiac in check in the second half. The Bobcats only managed two shots in the second half as the Stags squeezed the visitors away from danger for most of the second half. Whitcomb contributed both offensively and defensively, putting one shot on target, while Marshall led all Stags with four shot attempts.

The Bobcats scored the game's lone goal in the first half when Fairfield was whistled for a foul just outside the box. The ball was placed centrally about 22 yards from goal where Ryan Scheiderman stood for the set piece. He released a shot that bent around the Fairfield wall and caught the far corner of the goal to push the Bobcats in front in the 26th minute.

Fairfield had a few opportunities in the game especially in the second half. The Stags outshot Quinnipiac by a 7-2 count but only two of those attempts were on goal. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis was able to solve any Fairfield advancement by making five saves to register the shutout. He made three saves in the first half. Martin gave up only one goal, the 10th time this season that he gave up one goal or less.
