BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Fairfield University softball team took an early lead but a four-run third inning was enough to send Illinois State to a 5-3 win over the Stags at Florida Atlantic University's (FAU)  Parents Weekend Tournament. Rain forced the suspension of Fairfield's second game of the day with FAU leading 2-0 in the fourth inning. The game will be resumed following the Stags' game with Fordham University on March 14.

The Stags jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, a rally that started with a leadoff infield single by Amanda Ulzheimer. The freshman went to second after Alisha Marshall executed a bunt to put a runner in scoring position. Lacey Olaff brought her home with a two-out single to right field.

The run held up until the top of the third inning when Illinois State was able to put together three hits that resulted in four runs. Two of those hits were two-run homers that erased the one-run deficit and gave Illinois State all that it would need to win the game.

After surrendering a single run in the fourth inning, the Stags tried to rally in their half of the seventh. Lauren Petersen began the comeback bid with a pinch-hit single with the end result being the team's second run after Kristen Ball laced a triple to right-center field. Ball would score the second run of the inning on a passed ball, making the score 5-3. But the Stags could not muster any more two-out magic, resulting in the final score.

In the second game, the Stags started the contest with a pair of singles from Ulzheimer and Marshall. But, Fairfield could not push either runner across, ending the Stags opening scoring opportunity. The Stags nearly put a run on the board in the third inning, but Ulzheimer was thrown out trying to score on Angelina McGuire's double.

In the bottom of the third inning, FAU used three hits to score a pair of runs to take the lead, both of which were unearned. Rain forced the suspension of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.
