FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield Unviersity women's tennis team won in dramatic fashion as freshman Shelby Vertula fought back from two breaks down to clinch the match over Niagara, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the team remains unbeaten in the MAAC at 4-0.

In doubles action, Fairfield's second and third pairs earned the wins to secure the point for the Stags. The duo of Emily Lombardi / Karen McKeough picked up a 7-6 win at No. 2. And at No. 3, Diana Prinos and Shelby Vertula earned a 6-2 win.

The Stags got three more points in singles play to secure the league win. Jessica Pil picked up a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win in the fourth spot. Vertula won in three sets at No. 5 (6-2, 4-6, 6-4). And in the sixth spot, Lombardi grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

"Today's match was dramatic from the start. Karen and Emily played a great tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles to put us up 1-0," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "Then we got some great wins by our freshmen at the bottom of the lineup and Shelby fought back from 4-1 to clinch the match for us. I could not be prouder of them, that was a very big win to put us at 4-0 in the MAAC with Marist coming here on Wednesday."

Fairfield will host the Red Foxes on Wednesday with first serve scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on the WAC Tennis Courts.
