FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield University guard Tyler Nelson earned a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 1 first team as the organization honored the best in college basketball with its annual announcement.

The award is the one of many that the junior has collected during the 2016-17 campaign, including a spot on both the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) preseason team and a first-team nod on the postseason squad. His first-team designation within the conference made him a candidate for the MAAC Player of the Year award.

Nelson's success was instrumental in the Stags' 16-15 overall record and 11-9 MAAC mark, which earned the team a first-round bye in the MAAC tournament. He led the team in scoring with a 19.5 scoring average, scoring in double-digits in all but one game this year. Nelson led the team in steals with 1.1 per game (35 total) and also placed second among his teammates with 3.6 per contest (112 total).

His scoring average was second among the MAAC scoring leaders, just 0.2 points off the top conference's top scorer. Nelson led the conference in minutes played per game (36.1) as well as rated fifth for free throw percentage (.856), 12th in steals (1.1 per game), and fourth in three pointers per game (2.6).
