FAIRFIELD, Conn. – There has been a lot to love over the last four games for the Fairfield University women’s basketball team and now they will be playing on love’s national holiday. The Stags will look to set a season-high with their fifth-straight win when they visit the Saint Peter’s Peacocks on Tuesday at 5pm. If the Stags are victorious, it would also clinch another conference winning season for Fairfield, the tenth straight under Head Coach Joe Frager. The contest will tip-off at 5pm.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Stags are coming off their fourth-straight win in another complete team effort in a 64-43 win at Manhattan. The victory also showcased a little bit of history as Kelsey Carey and Casey Smith both tallied their 1,000th career point, becoming the 29th and 30th players to join the club. Carey recorded hers just three minutes in the game off a Smith assist. Smith would join Carey in the milestone with a behind the back layup with just four seconds left in the first half. The pair becomes the fifth teammate duo in NCAA Division I history to achieve their 1,000th point in the same contest. As far as the game is concerned, the Stags played nearly perfect basketball and led for all but three seconds when Macey Hollenshead converted the fast break layup with just three ticks off the opening whistle. Fairfield tied a season-high with 21 assists and did so with just nine turnovers, matching a season-low. Fairfield never trailed in the game and led by as many as 23.
GOING FOR ANOTHER MAAC WINNING RECORD: With their next victory, the Stags will pick up their 11th win of the season in the MAAC which would be the 11th-straight conference winning record for the Stags. It would also mean another winning record in conference for Joe Frager, who will further extend his conference record to 10-straight winning seasons in the MAAC to begin a career. Frager was the first coach in the conference to have eight such years to begin their career. In his 10 seasons at the helm, Frager holds a 127-73 conference record, winning 64 percent of his MAAC games. Frager coached his 200th career MAAC game in the win at Manhattan on February 12.
THE PEACOCKS SCOUTING REPORT: Saint Peter’s enters the game on a 12-game losing streak after a 58-42 setback at home against Monmouth. The defense has not been the problem lately for Saint Peter’s who has allowed 60 or more points just once over their last five outings. Even in their last game against Monmouth, the Peacocks held a very dangerous Monmouth offense to a .277 shooting percentage including a .226 mark from behind the arc. The Hawks converted on just 18 field goals in their 65 attempts. Saint Peter’s also forced 16 turnovers with rookie Zoe Pero and Brianna Tarabocchia each swiping three. The Peacocks are led by Taliah Hughes who has recorded double figures in scoring in 11-straight contests. Hughes is the team leader in points (13.0), rebounds (5.5), and field goal percentage (.492). She is also one of the team leaders on the defensive side by racking up a team-high 0.8 blocks and is second on the squad with 0.9 steals.
