
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Women's soccer senior Ahna Johnson and men's
soccer junior Christian Uy earned Fairfield University's Athlete of
the Year awards on Friday night. The awards were selected by vote
of the head coaches. The awards were presented during the school's
annual varsity athletic awards banquet.
Johnson claimed the award after leading the women's soccer team to the NCAA tournament for the second time in her four-year career. She tallied team-highs for goals (15) and points (34), and earned NSCAA/adidas All-America honors.
Uy picked up the male athlete of the year by leading the team in scoring with 16 points. Four of his five goals were game winners. He received the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament most valuable player award after helping the Stags win the tourney and advance to the NCAA tournament.
Johnson also picked up the Alumni Association's Female Scholar Athlete Award. She earned academic accolades as a member of the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America team, as well as on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team. The Physics/Information Systems major is a three-time MAAC All-Academic student-athlete.
The Male Scholar Athlete Award went to men's lacrosse senior Matt
Petre, a four-year defensive starter for the Stags. He led the team
in caused turnovers in 2009. A Finance major, Petre collected
All-NEILA honors as a junior.
Swimmer Michelle Yoshida accepted the Female Freshman of the Year, setting 14 school records in her inaugural season. She won three events and set three meet records at the 2009 MAAC championships, the first three-time MAAC champion in Fairfield history.
Joe Michalsin, a singles and doubles player with the men's tennis team, secured the Male Freshman of the Year award. He posted an 18-2 mark in doubles for the nationally-ranked Stags and was a perfect 5-0 in MAAC number one singles play during the regular season. He extended that streak wtih two wins at number one in the MAAC tournament.
The ECAC Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Academic Vice President Dr. Orin Grossman. He was honored for his 34 years of service to Fairfield University students. Under his guidance, the Universitye stablished the Center for Academic Excellence, the Center for Catholic Studies, and the Center for Faith and Public Life. He was also instrumental in the creation and development of the Fairfield University pep band which is seen at many athletic contests throughout the academic year.
