Stags Sweep Holy Cross in Season Opener

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield swimming and diving team made a splash in their 2007-08 season opener by sweeping Holy Cross tonight at the RecPlex. The women's team defeated the Crusaders, 133-110, while the men's team earned the 119-117 win.

The men's meet came down to the wire, but despite Holy Cross capturing the final two events, Fairfield collected enough points for the win. The Stags started off on a strong note as the 200m medley relay of Boris Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.), Chad Pfeifer (Darien, Conn.), Drew Kingman (Wilton, Conn.), and Sean McGonigle (Philadelphia, Pa.) broke the school record with a time of 1:53.98.

McGonigle and Kingman were double-winners for the Stags. McGonigle captured the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:03.86 and the 100m free with a mark of 56.41 seconds. Kingman captured the 200m IM by touching in 2:17.27, one second off his record-setting pace, and picked up a victory in the 400m free with a time of 4:22.50.

Pfeifer was a winner in the 50m free with a time of 25.38 seconds and also took second in the 100m fly with a time of 1:02.61. Romanovsky was victorious in the 100m back with a time of 1:06.80.

On the boards, sophomore Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) took both events, notching a mark of 236.70 in the 3-meter and 228.68 in the 1-meter. Rookie Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) placed third in the 3-meter with a mark of 143.03 and second in the 1-meter with a score of 165.30.

On the women's side, freshman Meg Young (Mashpee, Mass.) had a strong debut, capturing  the 400m free with a time of 4:52.15. Young also took second in the 800m free with a time of 10:03.72.

Rookie Allison Russoniello (Middletown, N.J.) was also victorious in her collegiate debut, taking the 200m free in 2:13.66.

Senior Rachel Waldstein (Needham, Mass.) won the 50m free with a time of 28.87 seconds. Waldstein was also second in the 100m fly with a time of 1:11.96. Rookie Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) won the 100m free with a time of 1:01.71 while senior Sarah Dent (Muttontown, N.Y.) won the 100m back with a time of 1:10.19.

In the diving events, Katie Yee (Bethesda, Md.) won the 1-meter with a mark of 215.78 and was second in the 3-meter a score of 204.38. Senior Jennifer Silvia (Osterville, Mass.) notched a pair of third place finishes in the 1-meter (182.48) and the 3-meter (171.53).

The women's team also captured both relays as the quartet of Dent, Liz Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.), Waldstein, and Kaitlyn Buckheit (Exton, Pa.) posted a time of 2:08.61 in the 200m medley and the 400m free relay of Dent, Young, Merz, and Russoniello earned a time of 4:17.47.

The Stags are back in action on Oct. 21 when they travel to Saint Peter's.
