Stags Split with Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Fairfield men's and women's swimming and diving teams split with Saint Peter's on Oct. 21. The women rolled over the Peahens in the 174-56 win while the men's team fell 139-83.

On the women's side, Fairfield won 10 events while rookies Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) and Allison Russoniello (Middletown, N.J.) were double-winners for the Stags. Merz victorious in the 500 free with a time of 5:26.59 and the 200 free. Russoniello was victorious in both the 50 free with a time of 26.15 seconds and the 100 free with a time of 57.45 seconds.

The Stags took the top three spots in the 200 free with Merz leading the way with a time of 2:02.00. Senior Sarah Dent (Muttontown, N.Y.) was next with a mark of 2:05.96 while junior Meghan Carlson (Worcester, Mass.) touched in 2:06.34.

Fairfield also took the top-four spots in the 100-back with Carlson leading the way with a time of 1:04.73. She was followed by Courtney Nicholas (Farmingville, N.Y.) in a time of 1:07.69, Sasha Campbell (Old Greenwich, Conn.) in 1:08.37, and junior Carolyn Sheppard (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) in 1:08.45.

In the 1000 free, rookie Vicki Herbert (Plainsboro, N.J.) captured the event with a time of 12:03.85 and was followed by runner-up Colleen Wilson (Niantic, Conn.) with a time of 12:12.21

Fairfield recorded numerous second-place finishes, including senior Rachel Waldstein (Needham, Mass.) who was the runner-up in the 100 fly with a time of 1:05.14 and freshman Samantha Ceglia (Glen Cove, N.Y.) who was second in the 50 free with a time of 27.29. Senior Liz Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.) was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.80 and was touched out by the Peahens' Christina Lay who posted a time of 1:10.39.

In the diving events, Katie Yee (Bethesda, Md.) took the 1-meter with a mark of 223.35 while senior Jennifer Silvia (Osterville, Mass.) was next with a score of 191.03. In the 3-meter, Silvia notched a winning mark of 221.33 while Yee was second with a score of 218.48. Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) was third in the both events with a score of 156 in the 1-meter and 150.08 in the 3-meter.

Fairfield captured both relay events. The quartet of Nicholas, Lawlor, Carlson, and Christina Brown (Shavertown, Pa.) clocked a time of 1:59.79 in the 200 medley relay while the group of Merz, Meg Young  (Mashpee, Mass.), Wanda Szarek (Middletown, Conn.), and Ceglia posted a time of 1:48.79 in the 200 freestyle relay.

On the men's side, Drew Kingman (Wilton, Conn.) was a double-winner. He captured the 1000 free with a personal best of 10:19.89 and won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.91. He also placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.73.

Sophomore Boris Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.) took the 100 fly with a winning time of 55.41 seconds, just shy of a personal best. He also placed second in the 50 free with a time of 23.47.

Senior Sean McGonigle (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the runner-up in two events with a time of 1:51.01 in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.01 and a mark of 50.82 seconds in the 100 free.

On the boards, sophomore Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) swept both events. He registered a mark of 228.30 in the 1-meter and a personal best of 257.55 in the 3-meter. Rookie Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) was the runner-up in both events, recording personals bests of 175.88 in the 1-meter and 154.43 in the 3-meter.

The women's team will head to Siena on Oct. 27. Both teams will travel to Providence on Nov. 3.
