
Four Program Records Fall in Loss to Marist

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams saw four program records fall this afternoon in a very strong effort against Marist College at the RecPlex. The Red Foxes, the two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champions earned a 146-82 win on the men's side and a 142-92 victory on the women's side.
Junior Drew Kingman (Wilton, Conn.) was a part of three records on the day. He captured the 200m IM and broke his own mark in the event for the second time this season with a time of 2:13.62. He shattered his record of 2:16.07 that he set last weekend. Kingman also won the 200 breaststroke with a record setting pace of 2:29.11. He bested his mark of 2:32.56 that he set last weekend. He also was a member of the 200m medley relay that set a school record with a time of 1:53.44. Senior Sean McGonigle (Philadelphia, Pa.), sophomore Boris Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.), and freshman Chad Pfeiffer (Darien, Conn.) were also members of the relay.
Freshman Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) accounted for the fall of fourth record. Merz knocked off a three-year old standard in the 200 free with a time of 2:12.07 in a second-place finish. She bested the mark of 2:12.42 set by Kelly Steele in 2004. Merz was victorious in the 400 free with a personal best of 4:39.40 and was the runner-up in the 100 free with a time 1:01.89 just off a personal best.
On the men's side, McGonigle captured the 400 free with a personal best of 4:23.05. He also was the runner-up in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.49 less than a tenth of a second off his personal best.
Romanovsky took third in the 50 free with a personal best of 25.60 seconds. He also had a personal best in the 200 back with a time of 2:22.98. Pfeiffer was third in the 100 free with a personal best of 56.38 seconds.
In the diving events, Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) placed fifth on both boards. He recorded a score of 219.90 in the 3-meter and registered a mark of 211.58 in the 1-meter. Freshman Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) had a mark of 137.48 in the 3-meter and a score of 144.60 in the 1-meter.
For the women, senior Liz Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.) won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:48.12 narrowly missing her school record.
Senior Sarah Dent (Muttontown, N.Y.) was the runner-up in the 200 IM with a time of 2:35.29. She was touched out by the Red Foxes' Maria Altieri (2:34.73). Dent also was third in the 200 back with a time of 2:29.61 less than a tenth of a second of her school record.
Junior Kaitlyn Buckheit (Exton, Pa.) finished third in the 50 free with a personal best of 29.29 seconds. In the 200 fly, freshman Sasha Campbell (Old Greenwich, Conn.) had a strong race shaving nearly six seconds off her personal best by touching in 2:37.10.
In the diving events, Katie Yee (Bethesda, Md.) was the runner-up on both boards. She recorded a mark of 219.53 in the 1-meter and a score of 215.10 in the 3-meter. Senior Jennifer Silvia (Osterville, Mass.) was third in both events. She had a 170.55 in the 1-meter and a 200.18 in the 3-meter. Sophomore Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) recorded a mark of 150.30 in the 1-meter and a score of 138.90 in the 3-meter.
Fairfield is back in action tomorrow, November 11, when it hosts the University of Maine at noon.
