Stags Swept By Maine

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams had another solid effort but came up short against the University of Maine as the Black Bears swept the Stags. The men's team was edged 138-102 while the women's team was on the losing end of a 163-80 decision.

Junior Drew Kingman (Wilton, Conn.) and senior Sean McGonigle (Philadelphia, Pa.) were both double-winners on the men's side. Kingman captured the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.21 and the 100 breast with a time of 1:10.63 which was .26 seconds off of his school record. McGonigle captured the 200 free with a personal best of 2:01.68 and posting a winning time of 4:24.29 in the 400 free.

Sophomore Boris Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.) cruised to a victory in the 100 fly with a personal best of 1:10.29 narrowly missing a school record. He also took third in the 50 free with a time of 26.02 seconds.

Freshman Chad Pfeiffer (Darien, Conn.) had a pair of second place finishes on the day. He was the runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 25.99 seconds and in the 100 free with a time of 56.99 seconds.

Freshman Jonathan O'Connor (Norwalk, Conn.) was the runner-up in the 800 free with a personal best of 9:22.29.

The men's 200 medley relay was a close event as Maine clocked a 1:54.78 touching out Fairfield which recorded a time of 1:55.00.

In the diving events, Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) was victorious on the 3-meter board with a score of 235.28. He was the runner-up in the 1-meter with a score of 216.15. Freshman Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded a score of 133.88 in the 3-meter and 155.18 in the 1-meter good for fourth in both events.

On the women's side, rookie Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) captured the 400 free for the Stags with a personal best of 4:38.39. She also was the runner up in the 800 free with a time of 9:34.56.

Senior Sarah Dent (Muttontown, N.Y.) turned in a pair of second-place finishes. She was the runner-up in the 200 IM with a time of 2:34.57 and in the 100 back with a time of 1:10.11, both of which were personal bests.

Senior Liz Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.) was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:18.33 less than a second off of her school record.

Junior Meghan Carlson (Worcester, Mass.) was third in the 200 IM with a personal best of 2:35.99 while freshman Meg Young (Mashpee, Mass.) was third in the 200 free with a time of 2:19.90.

In the diving events, Katie Yee (Bethesda, Md.) captured the 1-meter with a score of 224.33 and was the runner-up in the 3-meter with a mark of 191.92. Senior Jennifer Silvia (Osterville, Mass.) won the 3-meter board with a mark of 205.80 and was the runner-up in the 1-meter with a score of 194.25. Sophomore Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) recorded a score of 162.23 in the 1-meter and 128.40 in the 3-meter.

Fairfield will return to the pool in three weeks when it heads to the Harold Anderson Invitational, December 1-2, at the University of Rhode Island.
