FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield swimming and diving team opened 2008 with an impressive sweep of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Senior Day at the RecPlex. The men's team defeated the Highlanders 115-72 while the women earned the 139-31 victory. Fairfield finished first in 18 of the first 22 events.

On the men's side, sophomore Boris Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.) had a solid day as he broke a 13-year-old school record in the 100 fly with a time of 1:00.72. He eclipsed the mark of 1:00.76 set by Chris McTague in 1995. Romanovsky was also on the winning 200 medley relay.

Freshman Charlie Helm (Cheshire, Conn.) was a triple-winner, with a pair individual victories and a relay win. He took first in the 200 free with a time of 2:11.83 and in the 400 free with a time of 4:39.30. Helm was also on the winning 200 medley relay.

Swimming in their final home meet, seniors Sean McGonigle (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Rob Devine (Norwalk, Conn.) had solid afternoons. McGonigle was a double-winner, capturing the 100 free with a personal best of 56.31 seconds and the 800 free with a personal best of 9:21.02. Devine, meanwhile, had a pair of second place finishes. He was the runner-up in the 200 free with a time of 2:15.19 and in the 400 free with a time of 4:48.67.

Freshman Jonathan O'Connor (Norwalk, Conn.) also was a double-winner. He was victorious in the 100 back with a time of 1:10.05 and was on the winning 200 medley relay.

On the boards, sophomore Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) took both events with a mark of 221.48 in the 3-meter and a 237.53 in the 1-meter. Rookie Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) was the runner-up in both with a score of 120.08 in the 1-meter and 160.13 in the 3-meter.

For the women, senior Sarah Dent (Muttontown, N.Y.) was a double-winner. She won the 200 IM with a time of 2:35.95 and the 100 back with a time of 1:09.64.

Senior Rachel Waldstein (Needham, Mass.) was also a double-winner as she won the 100 fly with a time of 1:12.89 and was on the winning 200 medley relay.

Freshman Allie Russoniello (Middletown, N.J.) captured the 200 free with a mark of 2:17.85 while junior Megan Carlson (Worcester, Mass.) won the 400 free with a time of 4:51.32. Rookie Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) captured the 800 free with a personal best of 9:31.22.

Freshman Sasha Campbell (Old Greenwich, Conn.) had a pair of second place performances that turned out to be personal bests. She was the runner-up in the 200 IM (2:39.24) and the 100 back (1:14.02).

In the diving events, Katie Yee (Bethesda, Md.) won the 1-meter with a score of 221.55 and was the runner-up in the 3-meter with a score of 209.93. Senior Jennifer Silvia (Osterville, Mass.) won the 3-meter with a mark of 220.43 and was second in the 1-meter with a score of 203.18. Sophomore Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) was third in both events with scores of 172.95 in the 1-meter and 155.70 in the 3-meter.

With the victories, the women's team improves to 5-4 overall while the men's team moves to 3-4 on the year.

The women's team is back in action on Jan. 25 when it hosts Manhattan College at 6 p.m. at the RecPlex. Both teams will wrap up the regular season with a double dual meet against Iona and host Loyola on Feb. 2.
