
Swimming & Diving Swept by Iona and Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. - In its final tune-up before the MAAC Championships, the Fairfield men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept by Iona and Loyola this afternoon.
The men's team fell to Iona 188-106 and to Loyola 207-109 to finish the regular season with a 3-6 overall record. The women's team fell 184-105 to Iona and 172-104 to Loyola and finish the dual season with a 6-6 mark.
Fairfield had several event winners which including sweeps of the diving events. In the women's diving events, senior Katie Yee (Bethesda, Md.) captured the 1-meter with a mark of 229.62 while senior Jennifer Silvia (Osterville, Mass.) was victorious on the 3-meter with a mark of 207.08. Yee also placed second on the 3-meter with a score of 192.98 while Silvia was the runner-up on the 1-meter with a score of 185.40.
On men's side, sophomore Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) swept both events once again with a score of 229.62 on the 1-meter and 240.30 on the 3-meter. Rookie Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) was the runner-up to his teammate on both boards. Carisio had a score of 149.55 on the 1-meter and 154.20 on the 3-meter.
Junior Drew Kingman (Wilton, Conn.) captured the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.47. He also had a pair of second-place efforts. Kingman was the runner-up in a very close 100-yard breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:02.03 while Iona's Matt Magura recorded the winning time of 1:01.91. In the 200-yard IM, Kingman had a time of 2:02.18 to finish behind Iona's David Gartman who touched in 2:01.17.
On the women's side, senior Sarah Dent (Muttontown, N.Y.) posted a pair of second place finishes on the day. She was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke after being touched out by Maggie Wood of Iona. Wood posted a time of 1:02.45 while Dent clocked a time of 1:02.50. In the 200-yard IM, Dent registered a time of 2:19.80 to finish second. Dent was also third in the 200-yard back with a time of 2:15.15.
Rookie Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) had a solid day for the Stags. She was the runner up in the 500-yard freestyle with a personal of 5:19.06. She also finished fourth in the 200-yard free with a personal best of 2:01.50. She also had a personal best in the 100 free with a time of 57.06 seconds.
Junior Megan Carlson (Worcester, Mass.) took third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.54. Junior Liz Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.) was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.52 and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:37.43.
Freshman Allie Russoniello (Middletown, N.J.) was fifth in the 50-yard free with a time of 26.50 seconds and sixth in the 500-yard free with a personal best of 5:33.45. Senior Rachel Waldstein (Needham, Mass.) was fifth in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:22.86.
Rounding out the diving performances was sophomore Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) was fifth on the 1-meter with a score of 135.60 and had a mark of 145.88 on the 3-meter to finish sixth.
Also performing well for the men's team was senior Sean McGonigle (Philadelphia, Pa.) who was the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.43. He also was fourth in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:50.47 as well as the 100 free with a time of 50.54 seconds.
Freshman Jonathan O'Connor (Norwalk, Conn.) placed fourth in the 1000-yard free with a time of 10:48.29. O'Connor was also fifth in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:10.49.
Sophomore Boris Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.) had a trio of fourth place finishes. He clocked a time of 58.30 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke, a mark of 2:08.48 n the 200-yard back and posted a time of 54.87 seconds in the 100-yard fly.
Sophomore Alex Connaughton (Wayland, Mass.) notched a personal best in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.24 second which set him sixth overall.
The Stags will return to Baltimore, February 14-16, for the 2008 MAAC Championships hosted by Loyola.
