Women's Swimming & Diving Edges Siena 151-147

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's swimming and diving team edged out Siena College, 151-147, this afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) meet at the RecPlex. The Stags had several double-winners on the day as they improve to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Freshman Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii) was a double-winner for the Stags and set records in two of the four events she entered. She broke her second individual record of the season with a winning time of 2:10.62 in the 200m free, eclipsing the mark of 2:12.07 set by Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) last season. Yoshida also won the 50m free in a time of 27.67 seconds and was the lead leg of the second-place 200m medley relay. 

Yoshida also anchored second-place 200m freestyle relay which set a program record with a time of 1:53.63. The relay, which also consisted of freshmen Lauren Kennedy (Belmont, Mass.), Teresa Garrity (Middlebury, Conn.), and Marissa Toselli (Barrington, R.I.), broke the previous standard of 1:54.07 set by Kaitlyn Buckheit (Exton, Pa.) and former Stags Liz Lawlor, Jen Masi, and Brittany Hunter in 2007.

In addition to the relay performance, Kennedy also was a double-winner. She captured the 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:18.20, less than a second off the program record. Kennedy also posted a win in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:47.58 which is slightly less than six-tenths of a second off the program record.

Merz was the final double-winner. She captured the 800m free with a time of 9:37.93 and the 400m free with a time of 4:40.58.

Senior Meghan Carlson (Worcester, Mass.) captured the 200m back with a personal best of 2:29.92, which is seven-tenths of a second off the school record. She was the runner-up in the 100m back with a personal best of 1:09.59 and in the 200m IM with a time of 2:37.73.

In the 200m fly, the Stags took the top three spots. Freshman Aly Criscuolo (Pittsford, N.Y.) won the event in a time of 2:36.57, sophomore Sasha Campbell (Old Greenwich, Conn.) was the runner-up in 2:40.93 while freshman Caroline Menapace (Ambler, Pa.) posted a time of 2:44.42.

On the boards, Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) won the 3-meter with a score of 161.25 and was the runner-up on the 1-meter with a personal best of 186.75.

The Fairfield men's and women's swimming and diving teams are back in action on Nov. 1 as Providence visits the RecPlex at 1 p.m.
