
Records Fall As Swimming & Diving Splits With Providence

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Four program records fell this afternoon as the Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams split with Providence College at the RecPlex. The women's team downed the Friars 182-112 while the men's team fell by a score of 176-124. In addition to the records, the Stags also had numerous multi-event winners on the day.
Freshman Kekoa Taparra (Mililani, Hawaii) was a triple-winner for the Stags. He captured the 200m IM in a record-setting time of 2:12.11. Taparra bested the previous mark of 2:13.62 set by Drew Kingman last season. Taparra also captured the 800m free with a personal best of 8:46.86 and the 100m breaststroke in 1:06.20.
Senior Meghan Carlson (Worcester, Mass.) was also a triple-winner. She captured the 200m back in a record-setting time of 2:28.99. Carlson broke the previous mark of 2:29.21 set by Sarah Dent in 2004. Carlson captured the 100m back in a time of 1:09.14 and was a part of the winning 200m medley relay. In the 200m IM, Carlson was touched out finishing with a time of 2:36.18. Providence's Lauren Sepe was declared the winner in a time of 2:36.17.
Freshman Lauren Kennedy (Belmont, Mass.) captured two individual events and one relay for the Stags. Kennedy, who set the record (2:47.58) in the event last week versus Siena, posted a time of 2:47.65 in the 200m breaststroke to win the event. Kennedy also won the 100m breaststroke with a personal best of 1:17.98 which was just .67 seconds off the record. Kennedy was also a member of the victorious 200m medley relay.
Freshman Aly Criscuolo (Pittsford, N.Y.) was a triple-winner, capturing the 200m fly with a personal best of 2:35.91 and the 100m fly in a time of 1:10.72, while swimming the third leg on the winning 200m medley relay.
The women's 400m freestyle relay consisting of freshman Brenna Dean (Edison, N.J.), freshman Teresa Garrity (Middlebury, Conn.), sophomore Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.), and freshman Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii) set a record with a time of 4:08.19. They broke the mark of 4:08.44 set by Kelly Steele, Jen Masi, Brittany Hunter, and Megan Magura in 2004.
Yoshida also captured the 200m free with a time of 2:13.11 and was the anchor on the winning 200m medley. Merz, meanwhile, won the 400m free with a time of 4:39.32.
Freshman Greg Bellizzi (Edison, N.J.) broke the Stags' 50m free record with a time of 24.70 seconds. Earlier this season, Bellizzi tied the former record of 24.81 originally set by Chris O'Connell in 1984.
Junior Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) captured both men's diving events which were both held on the 1-meter board. Stecko posted a score of 176.63 on his first set of dives while notching a 234.38 on his second set. Sophomore Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) had a score of 145.65 to finish third in the opening set and a mark of 2:03.70 to finish as the runner-up in the second set. On the women's side, junior Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) captured the second round of the 1-meter with a score of 145.20 and took third in the opening set.
The Stags had a strong showing in the men's 200m breaststroke, taking the top-three spots. Freshman Brian Friedlander (River Edge, N.J.) led the way with a time of 2:32.39. He was followed by classmate Stefan Toi (Newton, Conn.) in 2:39.24 and sophomore Charlie Helm (Cheshire, Conn.) in 2:39.65.
With the win, the women's team improves to 3-1 while the men's team falls to 2-1 on the season.
The Stags are back in action on Nov. 8 as they travel to Marist College.
