Swimming & Diving Sweeps Manhattan and Bryant

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Bryant University and Manhattan College in a double-dual at the RecPlex this afternoon. The Fairfield men's team defeated Bryant, 123-108, and Manhattan, 184-28. The Fairfield women's team defeated Bryant, 151-72, and Manhattan 173-46.

In addition to the victories, which improved the women's record to 5-2 overall and the men's record to 4-2 this season, three program records were forged.

Two of the records belonged to Kekoa Taparra (Mililani, Hawaii). The freshman captured the men's 50 freestyle by tying the current record of 24.70 seconds which is held by classmate Greg Bellizzi (Edison, N.J.). Taparra also set a record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.19, breaking the previous mark of 2:12.77 set by Rob Willhoit in 2004. Despite the record, Taparra was the runner-up in the event as Bryant's Tom Ferrigno touched him out in 2:12.18.

The other record was set by freshman Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii) who also won two individual events. In the 200 back, Yoshida posted a winning time of 2:25.09 which eclipsed the record of 2:28.99 set by Meghan Carlson (Worcester, Mass.) earlier this season. Yoshida also captured the 50 free in a time of 27.50 seconds.

Freshman Lauren Kennedy (Belmont, Mass.) was a triple-winner for the Stags. She won the 200 IM with a time of 2:33.62 and the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:48.97. She was also the second leg of the 200 medley relay that posted a winning time of 2:08.84.

Freshman Aly Criscuolo (Pittsford, N.Y.) was victorious in the 200 fly with a personal best of 2:32.06 while Carlson captured the 100 free with a time of 1:02.78. Carlson was also second in the 200 free with a time of 2:16.14. Sophomore Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) had a pair of second-place finishes on the day. She was the runner-up in the 400 free with a time of 4:44.54 and the 800 free with a time of 9:47.15.

On the boards, junior Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) notched a personal best in the 3-meter with a score of 186.68. She also had a mark of 176.93 on the 1-meter.

On the men's side, freshman Brian Friedlander (River Edge, N.J.) captured the 200 breaststroke with a personal best of 2:31.30. He also finished second in the 200 IM with a personal best of 2:14.30.

Sophomore Jonathan O'Connor (Norwalk, Conn.) recorded a pair of second-place finishes. He was the runner-up in the 800 free, finishing in a time of 9:22.48, and the in the 200 fly, recording a time of 2:20.24. Freshman Andrew Robinson (Manalapan, N.J.) also had a pair of second-place finishes. He was second in the 200 free with a personal best of 2:02.76 and in the 100 free with a time of 55.90 seconds.

Freshman Tommy Peters (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was the runner-up in the 400 free as he finished with a time 4:34.19.

On the boards, Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) recorded a mark of 243.45 on the 1-meter and a score of 241.43 on the 3-meter while sophomore Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) had a score of 197.70 on the 1-meter and a mark of 194.85 on the 3-meter.

Fairfield wraps up the first half of its schedule Dec. 5-6 at the Harold Anderson Invitational at the University of Rhode Island.
