Nov 25, 2008
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards as announced by the league office this afternoon. Freshmen Kekoa Taparra (Mililani, Hawaii) and Lauren Kennedy (Belmont, Mass.) were named the respective MAAC Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week while juniors Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) and Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) were named the respective Men's and Women's Divers of the Week.
Taparra was a part of two records and notched two first-place finishes in Fairfield's double-dual victories over Manhattan College and Bryant University on Nov. 22. Taparra captured the men's 50 free by tying the current record of 24.70 seconds which is held by classmate Greg Bellizzi (Edison, N.J.). Taparra also set a record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.19, breaking the previous mark of 2:12.77 set by former Stag Rob Willhoit in 2004. Despite the record, Taparra was the runner-up in the event as Bryant's Tom Ferrigno touched him out in 2:12.18. The rookie was also the lead leg on the 200 medley relay that took first place. So far in his collegiate debut, Taparra has set four individual program records.
