Dec 9, 2008
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University freshman Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Punahou School) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Swimmer of the Week after another outstanding outing for the Stags. Yoshida won three individual events while setting a program record at the two-day Harold Anderson Invitational held at the University of Rhode Island.
Yoshida set the program record in the 100-yard backstroke with a winning time of 1:00.15. The previous record of 1:00.68 was set by Julie Thorson in February 1999. In her two other victories, she was less than two-tenths of a second off school records in each event. She won the 50-yard free in 24.36 seconds and the 100-yard free in 53.36 seconds.
Yoshida also performed well in the relays for the Stags. She posted the fastest split of all swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 24.03 seconds when she anchored Fairfield's third-place relay team which finished in 1:42.09. She also had the fastest split (51.85) as the anchor on the third-place 400y medley relay that had a time of 4:07.06.
This is the second MAAC Swimmer of the Week honor for Yoshida and fourth of the year for the Stags. Yoshida earned the recognition on Oct. 21 after winning four individual events and two relay events, while setting a program record in the first three meets of the season.
Through the first half of the season, Yoshida has posted 15 individual victories in eight competitions and has set four school records. She is the current record holder in the 100y back (1:00.15), the 50m free (27.06), the 200m free (2:10.62), and the 200m back (2:25.09).
Fairfield (4-2) is back in the water, January 3-11, when the Stags head to Puerto Rico for their winter training trip.
