Swimming & Diving Sweeps NJIT in Final Home Meet

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) this afternoon in the Stags final home meet of season. The women (6-3) posted a 132-27 victory while the men (5-3) notched the 122-66 win at the RecPlex.

Two records were set on the day both coming on the men's side. Freshman Kekoa Taparra (Mililani, Hawaii) set a program best in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:25.18. The previous standard was 2:29.11 which was set by Drew Kingman last season. Sophomore Jonathan O'Connor (Norwalk, Conn.) broke his own record in the 200m fly with a time of 2:17.82. His previous best was 2:19.09 which he recorded earlier this season. O'Connor also won the 200m back in a time of 2:27.98.

Freshman Brian Friedlander (River Edge, N.J.) was a double-winner. In the 100m breaststroke, he recorded the winning time of 1:10.04 while junior Alex Connaughton (Wayland, Mass.) was next with a time of 1:16.10. In the 100m free, Friedlander posted a time of 55.75 seconds just ahead of classmate Greg Bellizzi (Edison, N.J.) who finished in 56.66 seconds. Bellizzi went on to capture the 50m free with a time of 24.91 seconds.

Freshman Stefan Toi (Newton, Conn.) captured the 800m free with a time 9:31.97 while classmate George Daniolos (Shelton, Conn.) was the runner-up in 9:42.53. In the 200m free, Tommy Peters (Basking Ridge, N.J.) posted a winning time of 2:05.04 while Brendan Sarpu (South Windsor, Conn.) clocked a 2:08.88 to finish as the runner-up.

In his first meet back since studying abroad, junior Boris Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.) captured the 100m back with a time of 1:05.77. Freshman Andrew Robinson (Manalapan, N.J.) was the runner-up with a mark of 1:09.06.

On the women's side, freshman Norah Gentile (Manchester, Conn.) was a double-winner. She captured the 800m free in a time of 9:56.46 while freshman Samantha Distler (Glens Falls, N.Y.) was the runner-up with a time of 10:14.22. Gentile also posted the win in the 200m back with a time of 2:34.13.

In her final home meet, senior Kaitlyn Buckheit (Exton, Pa.) was a double-winner. She was victorious in the 100m back with a personal best of 1:11.69 while freshman Carolyn Menapace (Ambler, Pa.) was the runner-up in a time of 1:12.00. Buckheit also captured the 50m free in a time of 29.45 seconds while sophomore Samantha Ceglia was the runner-up in 30.29 seconds.

Sophomore Allie Russoniello (Middletown, N.J.) captured the 200m free in a time of 2:21.09 while freshman Barbara Mangino (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) was the runner-up in 2:27.70. Senior Meghan Carlson (Worcester, Mass.) won the 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:24.31.

In the 100m free, freshman Teresa Garrity (Middlebury, Conn.) was victorious with a time of 1:03.25 while classmate Marissa Toselli (Barrington, R.I.) was the runner-up in 1:03.74. Freshman Megan Reilly (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) was close behind, finishing in 1:03.80.

On the boards, junior Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) posted a score of 179.85 on the 1-meter and a mark of 142.05 on the 3-meter.

Fairfield concludes the dual meet season on January 31 as they travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. for a double-dual against MAAC foes Iona and Loyola. The 2009 MAAC Championships will be held February 12-14 in Baltimore, Md.
