Michelle Yoshida Named MAAC Women's Swimmer of the Week
Feb 3, 2009
Fairfield University freshman Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Swimmer of the Week after another impressive performance in the pool. The rookie captured two individual events, anchored a winning relay, and posted a program record in the Stags' double-dual against Iona and Loyola Colleges.
Yoshida set her fifth individual (seventh overall) school record of the year when she captured the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:56.12. She also won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 53.98 seconds, which is less than a second off the school record. In the 200-yard medley relay, Yoshida swam the fastest anchor split in the pool to help the Stags finish in a time of 1:54.74 and place ahead of Iona.
The award is the third of the season for Yoshida and the seventh weekly award for Fairfield. Yoshida was named Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 21 after winning four individual events and two relay events, while setting a program record in the first three meets of the season. She received the nod again on Dec. 9 after winning three individual events while setting a program record at the Harold Anderson Invitational.
Fairfield (6-5) heads to the 2009 MAAC Championships, February 12-14, in Baltimore, Md. For more information about the sold-out event, visit MAAC Championship Central.
