
Swimming & Diving Sets Records, But Falls to Iona & Loyola

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving team suffered a pair of tough losses to league foes Loyola and Iona this afternoon in the Stags' final tune-up before the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships.
The men's team fell to Iona 157.5-124.5 and to Loyola 161- 115. Loyola also defeated Iona, 157-111. The women's team fell 147-135 to Iona and 154-132 to Loyola. Loyola also defeated Iona, 154-128.
The Stags set several program records on the day while capturing several events.
Senior divers Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) and Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) each posted victories on Senior Day. Stecko, a co-captain, won the men's 3-meter with a score of 264.15 and was victorious in the 1-meter with a score of 247.20. Urbancic took third in the women's 1-meter with a score of 164.45. Urbancic then won her final event ever in the RecPlex by posting a score of 174.00 on the 3-meter.
Senior co-captain Boris Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.) was a member of record-setting 400m freestyle relay which posted a time of 3:43.60. Romanovsky along with sophomores Andrew Robinson (Manalapan, N.J.) and Greg Bellizzi (Edison, N.J.) and freshman Paul Bimmler (Reading, Mass.) eclipsed their own mark by .08 seconds and finished third in the event.
Romanovsky also finished fourth in the 100 back with a time of 1:05.05 and sixth in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.45. The Stags' other senior co-captain, Marina Meliones (Wayland, Mass.), posted a time of 1:29.79 in the 100 breaststroke and a time of 1:22.03 in the 100 fly.
In addition to his relay record, Bimmler broke his own record in the 100 free with a time of 53.91 seconds, tying for first in the event with Iona's David Gartman. Bimmler also captured the 50 free in a time of 24.26 seconds.
The Fairfield women captured both relay events in record-setting style. The 200 medley of sophomore Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii), sophomore Lauren Kennedy (Belmont, Mass.), freshman Cacky Keating (Chatham, N.J.) and freshman Caitlin Moran (West Henrietta, N.Y.) posted a time of 2:03.70 breaking their own program record by almost two seconds. The 400 freestyle relay of Teresa Garrity (Middlebury, Conn.), Keating, Moran, and Yoshida clocked a winning time of 4:04.19 breaking the previous standard of 4:08.19 set last season.
Keating also had an impressive night individually, breaking a pair of program records held by former Stags Brittany Hunter. Keating captured the 200 fly in a time of 2:26.33 breaking Hunter's record of 2:26.91 set in 2004. In the 100 fly, Keating was touched out by Loyola's Caitlin Cassidy (1:06.76), but Keating's time of 1:06.87 was good enough to break Hunter's record of 1:08.24 set in 2004.
Yoshida captured the 200 free in a time of 2:07.97, breaking her own program record by almost three seconds. In the 50 free, Yoshida was touched out by freshman Theresa Harvey of Iona. Harvey clocked a time of 27.36 seconds while Yoshida posted a time of 27.37 seconds.
Kennedy captured the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:44.69 and was third in both the 200 IM with a personal best of 2:31.48 and in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.64).
Moran took third in the 100 free with a personal best of 1:01.66 while Norah Gentile (East Hartford, Conn.) finished fourth in the 100 back with a personal best of 1:10.55.
Sophomore Brian Friedlander (River Edge, N.J.) was the runner-up in the 200 breaststroke with a personal best of 2:28.08. Friedlander also posted a personal best in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.25 which was good for fourth.
Freshman Andrew Hiss (Freehold, N.J.) finished third in the 100 back in a time of 1:02.98, fourth in the 200 back in 2:23.59, and fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.83.
In other diving action, sophomore Anthony Sbona (Higganum, Conn.) had a career day. Sbona posted a score of 205.15 on the men's 3-meter to place second and had a score of 185.85 on the 1-meter to finish second. Freshman Ryan Krebs (East Williston, N.Y.) took third on the 3-meter with a score of 180.45 and third on the 1-meter with a score of 176.15. On the women's 1-meter, freshman Kim Pettit (Westwood, Mass.) had a score of 112.95. She also posted a mark of 124.15 on the 3-meter.
The women's team finishes the season with a 6-5 record, marking the seventh-straight year in which they have posted a .500 record or better. The men's team finished the year at 5-5.
