FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2006 portion of its schedules with a dual meet against the University of Maine, Monday afternoon at the Rec Plex Pool on the Fairfield campus.
The Fairfield women, dropped a 141-96 decision to the Black Bears, while the Fairfield men, fell 146-96. The women fall to 5-5 on the season, while the men drop to 1-7 on the season.
On the women's side, sophomore Katharine Yee swept the one-meter and three-meter diving events. On the one-meter, she posted a 234.00, and on the three-meter she recorded a 207.67. Sophomore Jennifer Silvia finished second in the three-meter with a 197.40.
Junior Brittany Hunter touched the wall first in the 200-meter butterfly with a 2:29.33. She also finished second in the 200-meter IM with a 2:29.67.
Junior Jennifer Masi finished first in the 100-meter freestyle with a 1:00.98. Masi also finished ahead of the field in the 50-meter freestyle with a 27.49.
The 400-meter freestyle team finished first with a 4:26.89. Sophomore Erin Carrather, freshman Kaitlyn Buckheit, freshman Christine Burke, and senior Kate Roche helped Fairfield to the win.
The Fairfield men were led by sophomore Sean McGonigle who finished first in the 200-meter freestyle with a 2:03.26. In the 400-meter freestyle McGonigle touched the wall in 4:24.70.
Freshman Matt Rimmer posted a 2:22.53 to take the 200-meter backstroke, and junior Tom Scappaticci finished second in the 800-meter freestyle with a 9:28.58.
The Stags return to action with a pair of dual meets next weekend. On Friday, Jan. 20, the Stags will make a short trip up Interstate-95 for a clash with Yale, at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the Stags will host Holy Cross in a dual meet beginning at 1 p.m.
