FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Despite four school records falling, Stony Brook made Senior Day tough for Fairfield as the Seawolves edged the Stags at the RecPlex. The women (5-6) were snipped 152-143 while the men (1-7) fell 157-130.
The women's meet was close throughout, coming down to the final event, the 200m freestyle relay. Despite a record-setting time of 1:54.05 by senior Jennifer Masi (North Haven, Conn.), junior Liz Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.), sophomore Kaitlyn Buckheit (Exton, Pa.), and senior Brittany Hunter (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.), the Stags were touched out by Stony Brook, which notched a time of 1:52.25. The Fairfield quartet eclipsed the previous record of 1:54.28 set in 2004. Masi was the lead leg on the 2004 relay while Hunter becomes a part of her 19th school record.
The men's team turned in a solid performance with several records falling. For the second consecutive meet, sophomore Drew Kingman (Wilton, Conn.) put his name down in the record books three times. Kingman snapped the 200m breaststroke record with a winning time of 2:33.74, which bested Raul Delgadillo's mark of 2:35.74 set in 2004. Kingman then broke the 400m individual medley standard with a winning time of 4:50.33, surpassing Sean Killela's record of 4:53.41 set in 2004. Kingman was also a member of the 200m freestyle relay that broke the school record with a time of 1:42.04. Kingman, along with senior Tom Kozlowski (Farmingville, N.Y.), sophomore Matt Rimmer (Branford, Conn.), and sophomore Sean McGonigle (Philadelphia, Pa.), eclipsed the previous mark of 1:42.46 set in 2000. Kingman was also victorious in the 200m free with a time of 2:01.72.
Hunter, Masi and Lawlor each won two individual events. Hunter captured the 200m fly with a time of 2:28.55 and the 400m free with a time of 4:43.90. She also finished second in the 800m free with a time of 9:59.87. Masi captured the 50m free with a time of 27.53 seconds and the 100m free with a time of 1:10.17. Lawlor captured the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:18.10, which was slightly off her record-setting pace of 1:17.31 and was victorious in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:50.07.
Junior Rachel Waldstein (Needham, Mass.) captured the 400m individual medley with a personal best of 5:36.51. She also had a pair of second-place finishes. She took second in the 200m fly with a personal best of 2:32.34 and was the runner-up in the 100m fly with a personal best of 1:09.59.
In the diving events, junior Katharine Yee (Bethesda, Md.) swept both boards. She captured the 1-meter with a mark of 244.95 and the 3-meter with a score of 235.65. Junior Jennifer Silvia (Osterville, Mass) placed third on both boards with 178.28 on the 1-meter and a 211.05 on the 3-meter
McGonigle captured the 400m free with a time of 4:31.83. He also placed second in the 100m free with a personal best of 56.81 seconds and finished third in the 200m free with a personal best of 2:04.38.
Rimmer had a pair of second-places finishes. He was the runner-up in the 100m back with a time of 1:04.46 and in the 200m back with a time of 2:23.18.
In the diving events on the men's side, freshman Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) captured the 3-meter with a mark of 229.87 and placed second on the 1-meter with a mark of 220.95. Senior Russ Laub (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) placed third on both boards with a 154.35 on the 3-meter and a 174.75 on the 1-meter.
The Stags turned in several other strong performances. Buckheit placed second in the 100m back with a personal best of 1:12.74. Junior Sarah Dent (Albertson, N.Y.) took second in the 200m back with a time of 2:38. 65 and placed third in the 200m free with a time of 2:20.19. For the men, junior Rob Devine (Norwalk, Conn.) earned a second-place finish in the 800m free with a time of 9:40.19 while senior Tom Scappaticci (West Harrison, N.Y) placed second in the 400m free with a time of 4:34.89.
Fairfield wraps up the dual meet season at Holy Cross on February 3. The 2007 MAAC Championships begin on February 8 at Loyola College in Baltimore, Md.
