BALTIMORE - Junior Jennifer Masi set a new school and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) record, in the 50-yard freestyle, to lead the Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams in the first day of the 2006 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Fitness and Aquatic Center on the campus of Loyola College.

Masi posted a 24.24, touching the wall first in the event, and surpassing Rider's Melissa Michalov in 2001. Also in the 50-free sophomore Sarah Dent finished 13th with a 25.81, and freshman Kaitlyn Buckheit was 16th with a 26.06.

Junior Brittany Hunter broke the school-record in the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:05.68. Senior Kate Roche was 16th with a 5:25.50.

The women's 400-yard medley relay team of Dent, sophomore Elizabeth Lawlor, Hunter, and Masi set a new school-record with a 4:04.08. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Dent, Lawlor, Buckheit, and Masi set a new school-record with a 1:40.50 to finish fourth in the race.

On the men's side, sophomore Sean McGonigle finished 14th in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:55.85.

The men's 400-yard medley relay team finished seventh with a 3:43.30, as McGonigle was joined by freshman Matt Rimmer, senior Sean Killelea, and sophomore Brian Lloyd.

The MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships continue on Friday morning, and will continue through Saturday evening.
