KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Katharine Yee (Bethesda, Md.) and freshman Taylor Stecko (South Windsor, Conn.) each won individual diving events while several additional Stags turned in strong performances at the 11th Annual Harold Anderson Invitational at the University of Rhode Island over the weekend.
Stecko posted a personal best of 237.25 in the men's 3-meter and turned in a third-place finish in the 1-meter with a score of 210.30. Yee captured the women's 1-meter event with a mark of 223.10 and went on to finish eighth in the 3-meter with a mark of 148.05.
In addition to Stecko's strong performance in the men's diving events, seniors Diego Ibarra (Fairview, N.J.) and Russ Laub (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) also performed well. Ibarra placed fifth in the 3-meter with a score of 205.55 and seventh in the 1-meter with 138.15. Laub was sixth in both events, tallying a mark of 176.15 in the 3-meter and a total of 159.90 in the 1-meter.
The men's swimming team also had a strong showing during the competition. Junior Sean McGonigle (Philadelphia, Pa.) paced the Stags with several solid performances. He took third in the 100 freestyle with a personal best of 50.06 seconds. He also posted a fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:05.29 and a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a personal best of 1:50.13.
Freshman Boris Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.) also had a good afternoon, recording two personal bests. He finished sixth in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:14.29 and eighth overall in the 100 butterfly with a personal best of 57.87 seconds. Romanovsky also scored in the 50 free with a time of 23.88 seconds. He also swam on the Stags' 400 medley, 200 free, and 200 medley relays.
Junior Brian Lloyd (New Milford, N.J.) placed seventh in the 400 I.M. with a time of 4:42.92. Lloyd posted an eighth-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 2:10.76.
Junior Matt Rimmer (Branford, Conn.) was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.54 seconds. He also placed sixth in the 200 back with a time of 2:07.43.
On the women's side, senior Jennifer Masi (North Haven, Conn.) clocked a time of 25.09 seconds in the 50 freestyle to finish second overall. The University of Maine's Jessie Ellis-Alcaide took the event in a time of 24.83 seconds. Masi clocked a time of 56.04 seconds in the 100 freestyle to place fifth overall.
Senior Brittany Hunter (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) notched a time of 2:14.62 in the 200-yard butterfly to finish fourth overall. She also placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:21.92 and ninth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.21.
Junior Liz Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.) took third in the 100 breaststroke touching in a time of 1:09.91. Lawlor went on to finish eighth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:33.80.
The 200 medley relay team of junior Sarah Dent (Albertson, N.Y.), Lawlor, Hunter and Masi placed fourth overall with a time of 1:54.44.
The men's team placed fifth overall with 320 points. The host Rams won their 11th straight title with 845 points followed by Maine (638), Providence (529) and Holy Cross (365). Vermont was sixth with 34 points. The women's team finished sixth overall with a 296 points. Maine won the event with 847 points while Vermont was the runner-up with 736. Rhode Island was third with 690 points followed by Providence (455) and Holy Cross (418).
The Fairfield women's swimming and diving team (2-5, 2-3 MAAC) returns home on Dec. 9 to host Siena and Sacred Heart at 1p.m. in its last meet before winter break. The men's team has concluded competition for the first half of the season.
