After a six-week hiatus from dual meet competition, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action on January 20, when they host NJIT at 1 p.m. in the RecPlex. The contest is the first of the Stags' final two home meets of the season.
The women's team (4-5, 3-3 MAAC) last competed in a dual meet on December 9 when they downed Siena, 93-79, and Sacred Heart, 99-39, at the RecPlex. Senior Brittany Hunter won three events while the Stags captured 13 out of 16 total events on the day. Senior Jennifer Masi, juniors Liz Lawlor, Sarah Dent, and Katharine Yee were all double-winners.
On the men's side (0-5, 0-3 MAAC), the Stags last competed December 1-2 at the Harold Anderson Invitational where the team placed fifth overall. Freshman Taylor Stecko posted a personal best of 237.25 to capture the men's 3-meter and turned in a third-place finish in the 1-meter. Junior Sean McGonigle paced the Stags' swimming efforts with a pair of personal bests. He took third in the 100 freestyle with a personal best of 50.06 seconds and posted a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a personal best of 1:50.13.
The Highlanders of NJIT were last in action on December 9 when they were swept by Canisius. The men's team fell, 103-77, while the women's team was defeated, 61-26. On the men's side, junior Marc Ubaldi won the men's 200-yard and the 100-yard freestyle in 1:52.85 and 50.21, respectively, highlighting the day. For the women, NJIT picked up points in four events, with two swimmers, Alaine Fairweather and Teresa Higgins scoring in the 50-yard freestyle. Fairweather was third at 29.06 and Higgins was fifth at 30.20.
Fairfield's final three duals of the year are also important for Head Coach Bill Farley as he is a few wins away from becoming the winningest coach in program history. Fairfield needs three meet victories on the men's side and two meet wins on the women's side in order to earn the top spot in the coaching ranks.
Fairfield hosts its final dual meet of the year when Stony Brook comes to the RecPlex on January 27. The Stags will then travel to Holy Cross on February 3 to wrap up the dual meet season. The MAAC Championships bring on February 8 and run until February 10.
