The Fairfield swimming and diving teams will take to the RecPlex pool for the final time this season as the Stags host Stony Brook on January 27 at 1p.m. The day marks the final home meet for six seniors - Brittany Hunter, Jennifer Masi, Tom Kozlowski, Tom Scappaticci, Diego Ibarra and Russell Laub.
Last weekend, the Stags returned to the pool after a five-week hiatus to sweep NJIT. The men picked up their first dual meet victory of the season, with a 116-81 win while the women downed the Highlanders, 103-22. The men's team was powered by sophomore Drew Kingman who set school records in each of the three events he entered. Kingman, in his first-ever meet for the Stags, set new standards in the 200 IM, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 medley relay along with Matt Rimmer, Tom Kozlowski and Boris Romanovsky.
With the victories, Head Coach Bill Farley moved closer to becoming Fairfield's all-time winningest coach. He needs one victory on the men's side to tie wins leader Richard Lewis' total of 17 career victories and one meet win on the women's side to tie leader Phil Palumbo's 35 career wins.
Scouting the Seawolves
The Stony Brook women's team, which sports a 2-7 record, fell to Vermont, 162-129, on January 20. Senior Hailey Lewandowski swept both diving events to earn America East Diver of the Week accolades for the second time this season. She won the one-meter board, scoring 242.40 points, and the three-meter board with 226.73 points.
The Stony Brook men's team, which yields a 6-2 record, was last in action on January 18 when the Seawolves split a double-dual meet with Binghamton and Lafayette. Stony Brook fell to Binghamton but edged Lafayette, 71-68.
The Seniors
Hunter has left a lasting impression in the Fairfield record books. Currently, she holds or is a part of 18 school records - 12 individual and six relay. Masi became the swimming team's first MAAC Champion, capturing the 50-freestyle and setting a MAAC record in the process. She also holds 12 school records.
Kozlowski also has had a successful career in the Red and White. Most recently, he was the final leg of the record-setting 200m medley relay. Scappaticci has had a solid senior campaign thus far. As the MAACs approach, he looks to score points at the event for the third-straight year. Scappaticci, like Hunter, is a two-time MAAC All-Academic selection.
Ibarra and Laub have been solid divers for the Stags. They have won numerous individual events throughout their careers. At last year's MAAC Championship, Ibarra and Laub placed in the top-10 on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
Fairfield wraps up the dual meet season on February 3 at Holy Cross. The 2007 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships begin on February 8 at Loyola College in Baltimore, Md.
