FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams returns to the pool, at the 2006 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships at Loyola (Md.). The MAAC Championships begin on Thursday at the Loyola College Fitness and Aquatic Center.
The championships begin on Thursday at 10 a.m. with preliminary action, and the finals beginning at 6 p.m. on each day. Please log onto http://www.maacsports.com/doc_lib/swim%20schedule%20of%20events.htm for the complete order of events.
On the women's side, junior Jennifer Masi garnered three weekly awards this season. She was named MAAC Swimmer of the Week on February 7 and December 6, and the ECAC Swimmer of the Week on December 14.
In addition, classmate Brittany Hunter garnered a pair of MAAC Swimmer of the Week awards on January 24, and November 15.
The Fairfield women's divers will be led by sophomore Katharine Yee, who was named MAAC Diver of the Week on October 25. Sophomore Jennifer Silvia will also be competing for the Stags.
On the men's side, the Stags will be looking for good things from sophomore Sean McGonigle and classmate Robert Devine in the distance freestyle events. Senior Raul Delgadillo should also lead the Stags in the individually medley and in the breaststroke.
Also looking to do well this weekend is freshman Matt Rimmer in the backstroke.
The Fairfield men's diving team will be led by seniors Rob Penwell and Diego Ibarra. Penwell was a MAAC Diver of the Week on November 8. In addition, senior Jon Barrett, junior Diego Ibarra, and junior Charles Laub will compete for the Fairfield men.
At the 2005 MAAC Championships, the Fairfield women finished in fourth place, with a total of 420 points. The Fairfield men, finished sixth with 317 points. In total nine school-records were broken by Fairfield swimmers over the course of the three-day championship. Marist College swept both the men's and women's team titles.
